Calotype
CALOTYPE is the solo project of singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and remixer, Larry Hess.
Hess grew up in NY, where at a young age he began writing and performing in a wide variety of bands and projects ranging from punk to indie, experimental and electronic rock.
Influenced by lo-fi artists such as Lou Barlow’s Sebadoh, Daniel Johnston, Guided by Voices and John Frusciante, Hess joined the ranks of the “4 track revolution” of the early 90’s with his first solo project Radio Nine. At the age of 17 he became part of the seminal NYC instrumental collective The Feud, touring relentlessly and releasing 2 critically acclaimed full length albums.
Since 2006 he has released 3 full-length albums and 3 EPs as the front man of NYC’s dramatic post-pop outfit Hunters, Run!
In 2010 he released the mostly acoustic “Thanksgiving EP” under his own name.
In 2011, Hess’s Calotype project will be releasing a series of singles on NY singer-songwriter label 27 Productions. The first single “(you’re not a) Betting Man” written, performed, recorded and mixed by Hess in his own portable home studio is due out September 2011.
